iPhone loves Travel Channel GO

By Chris Ackermann on June 24, 2008

Travel Channel GO's iPhone web application is now available on Apple's iPhone/iPod Touch web applications portal - so, if you have one of these magical devices, you can now add our exciting local search service directly from our friends at Apple.

Or if you're holding out for that shiny new iPhone 3G (and who isn't?) - be sure to add Travel Channel GO as soon as walk out of the store to start searching for your favorite things nearby!  You'll certainly be in need of a nice caffeine fix after braving the long lines for your new toy....

When I try to locate myself on the map using "internet connection" it gives me Los Angeles - not god since I'm in San Diego.
I could use the zip code or city to locate, but that is a general location and doesn't keep up with my movements.

Please fix the "internet connection" capability. I look forward to using this app.

My Review of Travel Channel GO.
Goods:
- Very detailed list and wide range of items on the Explore button.
- I like how the food selections in places to eat are broken out in many types and showed pretty much every local business, no matter how small.
- "Show nearest on map" is a great function to quickly narrow down the closest target.
- "Free WiFi" list is complete with business name, however, it's displayed on a non-scalable map, and numbering doesn't match list, although I assumed #1 on the map was the first on the list.

Bads:
- Maps are not resizable like Google Maps, and only sometimes show the business, not me and the business so I know where to go.
- The Directions page was quick, but it was one-third directions, two-thirds commercial from Walgreens or other sponsors. Hard to believe the Travel Channel needs to subsidize this project with a sponsor. "Information provided by Citysearch". Get rid of the 2 page commercials, please.
- Once I connected to my home wifi and did a find-me by "internet connection", it correctly found my location. However, earlier in the day while out and about, I got either Los Angeles, Sunnyvale, or Costa Mesa CA, although I was well connected to various wifi's, including an Apple Store.
- Checked "Business Travel" then ATM's, and it showed 6 in my area. However, it was a generic label of "ATM" on the list, and they were numbered on the map. No way to match the list with the map unless each is checked.
- Dots on the map should be linked to what it is. So when I tap on green dot 1, it should take me to that item listing.
- Directions on the map should have a hilighted trail showing where to go that matches directions. As shown, the map is too small with only a fraction of street names.
- "Bus Stations" I thought would show bus stops and routes, but listed taxi's, limo's, tour buses, charters, etc. Those are good for those functions, but please add a city bus route button with maps for the bus stops and timetables.

This app has great potential, but needs some serious fine-tuning. I look forward to using it regularly when it's tightened up.

@Don - Thanks for the feedback. We've taken note and will use this great feedback as we move forward and continuously improve the application!

Good to hear! I have another feedback item:
Added a friend to "My Friends", got a successfully sent yellow bar, then tapped "Show Me On Map" - got an alert that said I haven't invited anyone.
Perhaps the invite needs to be accepted before the Show Me On Map function works?

I've tried several times to submit feedback through the webapp, however I keep getting a site-generated failure alert (yellow bar), even though I'm well connected to wifi/3G.

Thanks for working this app, it's a great resource.

I'm so glad Anthony is going to the Azores Islands as all my grandparents were born there except my mother's mom and her parents were. So I'm really interested to see the program. Thanks

When adding a new location with the Iphone App, there is no way to make a correction in address/location....I added a location and it took the location I was at 3 hours latter putting the location of the land Mark 100 miles from the actual location. I can find no way to correct the address mistake. Shared location info should be editable.

I think the App is cool, but needs some work and I really hope to see an improved version. For the second time I entered in a new location, my I-Phone had my location in Google Map correct but the App set the location about 600 miles in the middle of North America instead of the East Coast. I can find no easy way to edit and make a correction through the App, if I go in through Safari Web Browser I was able to edit the first one but Yahoo map still shows wrong location and the second postin brings up an error on the page.

Please work on an improved version, perhaps the ability to add more than one photo and also video, easy editing of stories, resizing maps and photos.

This is such a good idea for an App, it is just needs a few improvements. You folks are really onto something here, please keep at it.

Thanks,
Marco

Horrible! As you can see from the App Store rating.
Does not work on an iPod Touch since there is NO option to select a location manually! Should not have been released without this option.
